Wado Ryu means the “School of the Way Of Harmony”. The Wado Ryu practitioner does not use force against their opponent but instead harmonises with them. On a physical level this refers to moving as they move, avoiding their attack whilst simultaneously delivering a counter attack. At a higher level it means to be at one with your opponent on a mental plane thus knowing when they are going to attack. It is said that an expert Wado Ryu exponent knows when you are going to attack before you know yourself. Wado Ryu utilizes Taisabaki. This is a method whereby the body angles are changed to put you out of reach of your opponent but keep them within reach of your counter attack. Weapons used for counter attacking in Wado Ryu include kicks, punches, arm locks, wrist locks, throws and sweeps. The style is very much a defensive style, using an opponent’s force and agression against themselves. This makes the style ideal for smaller or less strong people to practice.
