Technique! How can I describe in words what has taken me 9 years to realise I can't do? Technique covers all the physical aspects ( target, timing, stance, body weight distribution, what leg to put where, what arm to use, when to breathe) with all the mental aspects ( Kime (attitude), Shin (spirit), focus, Zanshin (Awareness)). For those of us that are really trying to master the Martial Arts, this one word sums up everything we strive for. We KNOW what to do (We've been told a million times), but still we can't do it. The attitude and commitment we put in to each and every technique is what Karate is all about. The student that says they are bored with doing Junzuki, tired of doing Pinan Nidan, fed up with Ippon Kumite - Chudan Soto Uke doesn't know what they are trying to achieve. They are trying to perform a technique. They are not trying to live the perfect punch; They are not trying to realise the perfect defence. They are not trying to be karate. technique is the foundation of good karate. Under this heading we learn a single punch, a single kick or a single block. We study the detail of how the technique is performed giving consideration to target, timing, technique. This we call the three T's.
In performing a basic technique, care must be taken to ensure that the defence (Uke) or strike (Uchi) would be effective were an opponent in front of you. All too often we perform a front punch (junzuki) with the fist at shoulder level. What is the point of punching an opponent in the shoulder? The chances are you will damage your fist as much as they will damage their shoulder, especially if you punch the outside of their arm at this level. Stomach level (Chudan) punches are meant to be delivered at stomach level! This is the solar plexus. The solar plexus is a nerve centre governing the breathing. It has impulses passing through it that control the diaphragm, the muscle that instigates breathing. If this muscle does not receive messages from the brain, it cannot function properly. If your opponent cannot breathe, how long will it take you to defeat him? The body's natural defence from a shot "On The Button" (in the solar plexus) is to shut down all non essential bodily functions. This includes looking, hearing, smelling,
